Otoplasty
Otoplasty is the procedure that corrects protruding ears, also known as “bat ears.” It is common for ears to be positioned far from the scalp from birth, which can create an unesthetic appearance. You should know that solutions exist, and the procedure has an easy recovery and positive effects on both physical appearance and psychological well-being.
Protruding ears represent a non-hereditary genetic anomaly (not inherited) that affects approximately 5% of the population.
WHEN DO YOU NEED OTOPLASTY?
The period immediately after birth (from the first 72 hours up to a maximum of the sixth week of life) is ideal for treating protruding ears non-surgically. Special splints or adhesive tapes are used and must be worn continuously for approximately 8 weeks.
If this period has passed, otoplasty can be performed in the following situations:
- when there is an angle greater than 30 degrees between the ear and the skull
- a distance greater than 2 cm between the ear and the skull (back part of the ear)
- when the ears are too large relative to the size of the head

FROM WHAT AGE IS OTOPLASTY RECOMMENDED TO CORRECT PROTRUDING EARS?
- Preferably at 5–6 years for children, as the ear is sufficiently developed and negative remarks from schoolmates can be avoided
- Adults can undergo it at any time as long as they are in good health and follow the doctor’s recommendations
WHAT TYPE OF ANESTHESIA IS REQUIRED FOR OTOPLASTY?
- local anesthesia for adults
- general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation for children
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?
Otoplasty surgery lasts between one and two hours.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PROCESS AND POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS?
- After surgery, the ears must be covered with a compression bandage
- Approximately 7–10 days later, the doctor removes it along with the stitches
- Average pain in the first days is relieved with analgesics
- The ears may swell and/or bruise in the first two weeks
- For one month after removing the stitches, a headband must be worn to keep the ears in position
WHEN CAN YOU RESUME DAILY ACTIVITIES?
Adults can return to work or resume daily activities just 2–3 days after surgery. For children, one week is sufficient.
IS THE OTOPLASTY RESULT PERMANENT?
Absolutely yes, the result of otoplasty is permanent, as long as all post-operative instructions are followed.
